Once you have read the Basic Vocabulary document and listenend to the lecture , write a one paragraph response stating your reactions to the similarities with your Christian faith. What surprised you the most?
From the vocabulary of Native American Spirituality. I found several things very simular to the catholic faith. As Catholics we have our patron saints that we pray to. In Native American terms "All My Relations" talks about how we are connected to people who have gone before us. Native Americans have spirit keepers just as we have guardian angels or our patron saints. Catholic's also light candles at the beginning of mass, or for prayers for the deceased. We use fire at our Easter Virgil and use incense at funerals. The same as Native Americans use fire as a part of ritual ceremonies. They also use different dried spices and plants that are burned and the smoke represents their prayers being sent up to God.
I cannot say I had a huge reaction to the similarities, but I was able to pick out a couple and compare them to my faith as a Christian. I especially picked out the word from the Native American Vocabulary, 'AHO', meaning amen. Although I am not Catholic, I found that it was very similar to what the Catholic religion does when they start off with a prayer.
